Fix Excel Startup Errors

MS Excel is a widely used application that is used to store large amount of data and it allow you to
organize and manage data. However, sometimes Excel users encounter several problems while they start Microsoft MS Excel. Some of the Ms Excel startup problems are:
  • Incompatible version
  • Registry key corruption
  • Conflict with other application
  • Corrupted Excel program shortcut
  • Corrupted add-ins under Tools menu

Some users may experience the above startup errors when you try to start Excel file or when you run Excel file from the Start menu. So, how to fix it?

Solutions
To fix these startup errors, follow the below steps:
1 - If Excel shows error while opening application by double from desktop, then following the below methods will solve your issue:

For Excel 2013, 2010 and 2007


For Excel 2013, 2010 and 2007 you need to run setup/repair.

For Excel 2003

In Excel 2003, the Regserver switch use to write the shell registration for Excel.



Click Start, Run and type: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Regserver
2 – If Excel file display errors during startup process then you may fix the issue by following the below steps:

Step 1 - Open Excel without any Add-ins: You can open Excel without Add-ins by using Automation switch from the XLSTART folder:


Step 2 - Click Start, Run and type in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Automation

If you still face the error then it may be due to add-in or a hidden workbook that is loaded on Excel. There are several types of Add-ins, so uncheck all add-ins and then start your Excel file.
In Excel 2013/2010/2007 you can check it by Office button or File tab, Excel options, Advance tab.

In Excel 2003 you can check it by Tools, Option, General, Alternate Startup file location.


3 – Sometimes disabled files also prevent Excel files from opening. So, if your Excel file is not opening due to disabled files then you can follow the below method to fix it:
In Excel 2013/2010/2007 – You can check the disabled by clicking on Office button, then click on Excel Options. Click the add-in and use dropdown.
In Excel 2003 – If the file is disabled then try to enable it. But sometime in doing so Excel files crashes and it gets severely corrupted. In such case you have to use any third party Excel repair tool.
4 – If your workbook file is not opening due to corruption of temp file then try to delete or clean TEMP folder.
5 – You can also solve the above issues by starting your Excel file in Safe Mode.

6 – In most cases the above methods can fix the Excel startup errors, but if your problem is not solved then you use MS Excel file repair tool to fix it. Such tool is specifically designed to repair and restore corrupted Ms Excel files.
